Oh and by the way ......

If one more person had the bad manners to become ill, I was going to scream. With the kids home from college, my car no longer belonged to me, but was dashing about picking up friends not seen for a whole semester. That meant that I had to hire a car to see to my patients and to go to hospital for rounds. Unused to any but my own vehicle, my insurance agency recommended temporary cover for a car for hire. I had never heard of such a thing, but I tried it anyway because it wasn't very expensive.

No sooner than I had received the keys to the car, one of my patients called. I had to journey across town to treat her, as she was confined to bed and couldn't travel. Shouting at traffic, wishing myself tucked onto a comfortable chair with hot tea and biscuits watching the telly, I drove to her house to see what was the matter. Upon arrival, her daughter ushered me into the house and led me to my patient's bedroom. My pager went off, the daughter's mobile phone rang just as my patient screamed. All thoughts fled my mind as I dashed to her bedside.

My patient had been bedridden due to an industrial accident ten years before. She was paralyzed from the waist down and required daily help in the form of her daughter and son-in-law, in whose house she lived. The call today was because her body was suffering pain from a kidney infection. Antibiotics had made a dent in the infection but the pain still affected her. After loaning her my car keys, I wrote a prescription for her daughter to get filled at the pharmacy for stronger pain medications plus stronger antibiotics. I sat beside my patient to chat until her daughter returned from the pharmacy.

Her daughter's husband had rung her to ask a question and my pager had sounded from my children. At the same time the buzzers sounded, my patient had a stab of pain she couldn't manage and screamed. All the noise and screaming had rattled her badly, so I held her hand until her daughter returned and told her about my children. She had never heard of temporary cover on a car for hire but agreed that it was a good idea and resolved to tell her daughter about it. Her son-in-law drove their car on his job as a sales representative, so her daughter could use another car some days. This temporary cover thing sounded like a godsend to her.

When her daughter returned, I explained when to take the medications and to take them with foods. I had to leave for hospital but I asked them to alert me to any problems. My hired car flew along the road to hospital just in time for rounds. The temporary cover on the hired vehicle came in handy while the children were home from university. I would definitely use it again and highly recommend it.
